Two hospital trusts wished to establish a joint Pathology service. Stock management systems across the five operating sites were known to be run independently. We were asked to develop an approach to introducing a single standard.
What we did
We interviewed key staff and service stakeholders across 21 separate process areas to understand and record variations in current processes and establish ‘preferred’ options that could form the basis for a new approach. These were then assessed, jointly with stakeholders, against effort and risk criteria to establish the most acceptable and deliverable solutions.
We recommended a new operating model to create a ‘single service’, delivered through centrally managed stock and procurement and logistics services, to deliver over 300 process improvements. These included the creation of a single e-catalogue to automate routine ordering and rationalise the supplier base, standardise payment terms and service level agreements.
