The brief:

FCO Services needed to make savings. This Opportunity Assessment looked at ways to gain additional revenues alongside reduced operating costs.

What we did:

FCOS are involved in the global distribution of materials relating to the UK’s diplomatic activities. In addition to the scheduled movement of goods, other items are often critically important and sometimes have to be moved at short notice. The majority of shipments are made via airfreight. Our detailed analysis of product shipments allowed us to identify demand patterns, shipment frequencies and volumes. Using this information we engaged in detailed discussions to review freight charges and gain, from them, advice on how the same movement patterns and deadlines could be achieved more cost effectively.

The result:

We assessed the contractual and operational aspects of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office global distribution network and identified £600k recurring annual savings through reduced supplier freight charges with further 17% in operational cost savings within FCO’s own organisation. We also developed a two year strategic plan, in line with the end of the contractual term, and the implementation strategy needed to successfully deliver interventions on a global scale to enable FCOS to create a class leading logistics solution for their customers.
