Feedback from staff meetings had identified a number of operational frustrations and concerns. The senior leadership team wanted to find a tangible and highly visible way to demonstrate their commitment to improving performance across the organisation.
What we did:
Beginning with an initial 3 day diagnostic, working with the engineering team, we demonstrated the value of process improvement techniques to staff. Using their experience and some process mapping workshops we identified, together, 6 immediately actionable process improvements. It was so successful that they recommended their experience to their colleagues and this, in turn, led to the decision to provide formal 6Sigma training, as part of a wider improvement ‘Acceleration Programme’.
We designed an engaging and highly interactive, accredited, 6Sigma Green belt training course. Working with 3 teams (4 staff in each) we asked them to identify a business critical issue that they felt they would like to work on. They then presented their proposals to the senior leadership team. Each project was duly endorsed and a senior sponsor appointed to provide support and manage corporate risk.
Over the next five weeks, the teams were trained in one of the five DMAIC stages and then coached in their application over the following four days, during which the teams developed and practised their new skills, engaging colleagues, designing new solutions and running workshops and briefing presentations.
Following their accreditation, the teams were able to continue to deliver their chosen projects over the subsequent three month period, without the need for any further support or guidance. The projects each helped to reduce operational risk and operating costs, improve customer safety and services alongside rapid and noticeable behavioural/culture change and improved staff morale.
